AC Noises: What They Mean

Is your air conditioner making noises? We’re not talking about the kind of noise where you put your ear up to the vents and hear the sound of a gentle breeze. We’re talking about the noises that make you uncomfortable, scared, or downright angry. These noises signal problems that always need to be addressed by a professional, and we’re here to talk about those types of problems.

If you’re confused, or you just want to get to the bottom of your AC’s strange sound, then you’re in the right place. We’ll talk about some of the most common AC noises we come across and why they mean you need to invest in AC repair in Columbia Valley.

The goal is that after reading this, and reading how serious a repair need like this can be, you’ll call for professional help from a team that cares about you. Sound good?

Keep Your Ears Peeled

An air conditioner isn’t supposed to make any of these noises. There isn’t really an exception to this rule. Also, be careful when you hear people talk about their experiences with an AC making a noise, since every home is different and every situation unique. You’ll only get the solutions you need when you call a team that’s ready to fix your system for the long term.

Here are a few sounds your AC might make and what they signify.

If your air conditioner is grinding, then there’s a good chance you need repairs as soon as possible. This can be a problem that comes from the components in your AC’s compressor that are responsible for pressurizing the refrigerant at the heart of the cooling process. When the pistons of this part are worn down, they’ll cause a grinding noise until the system either loses its efficacy completely or just breaks down in general. Remember, the compressor is the most expensive component of your AC, so this is not a problem to take lightly!

Buzzing signifies some kind of electrical problem that is causing strain in your system. A buzzing noise can also signify a problem with debris blocking the condenser fan, causing a loud and uncomfortable buzz to begin. Either scenario where you hear buzzing is a bad one, and you need repairs soon.

Hissing and Bubbling

Hissing and bubbling is a common sound to hear, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay. It signifies refrigerant leaking from your system. That’s because the hissing is the gaseous refrigerant leaking out of the refrigerant lines, while the bubbling is the sound of oxygen bubbles forming inside the refrigerant line. Regardless of what caused it, it needs to be fixed!

Rattling and Clanging

When a part comes loose inside your air conditioner, it can make a rattling or clanging noise. While this might seem benign, it can become catastrophic as that loose component bumps into a sensitive one like your compressor or coils, causing them to be misaligned. Get this fixed before it becomes a serious problem.
